“Lance Lizardi” (2017), which calls itself “a film by Lance Lizardi” but appears to be the work of Xander Robin, whose unusual feature “Are We Not Cats” recently opened in New York, starts off as a goofy home-baked quasi-doc about a guy who likes lizards so much he gets his name changed; it subtly morphs into an absurdist parable about taking lizard love too far.New York Times
The pseudonymous director of Lance Lizardi shares his name with the titular character, who changes his name to reflect his reptilian affinities. Over the course of this gross, eerie montage, this Florida Man starts out as a hobbyist, becomes an obsessive, and finishes as a kind of swamp thing himself. The film has the glitchy grammar of the found digital object, the fetid anarchy of the Everglades, and the squicky-to-the-touch intensity of a pagan ritual designed by the weirdest kid in your high school. It is especially recommended to anyone who’s ever considered wearing a live lizard as an earring.Vulture
Loved the footage of lizards (I hope to own a pet bearded dragon one day) but beyond that there's nothing to this rubbish.MasterPike
“Lance Lizardi” is a lizard free-for-all with entrancing originality. NoBudge
"Haha this was weird but I enjoyed it from beginning to end somehow! Also want to say I would really appreciate if anyone could check out my group's new track on soundcloud, our name is Cardenrap, thanks so much if u look us up!" - Andy Gamero
“It's all pretty random stuff, didn't learn anything from this. Is it documentary, fiction, out-takes? I guess this is the future of film-making. Have at it." - djwaterman
