Diamond Princess en Plein Aire
2015
Jacolby Satterwhite & Trina
In the most recent installment in Jacolby Satterwhite's Reifying Desire video series (on view in the 2014 Whitney Biennial) the artist continues his exploration of 3-D animation and digital space as a utopian realm to explore memory and personal history. Scored by Patricia Satterwhite's drawings and Miami rapper Trina's iconic Diamond Princess album, the piece uses the hyperbolic language and imagery from both sources to construct a hedonistic, performative and queer utopic narrative.
Jacolby Satterwhite created this film for Borscht 9.

"Satterwhite’s video is difficult to describe. He took his mother’s drawings of armor, weaponry, and architecture, then rendered them as 3D digital images, which he used to create a trippy moving-image collage, along with pictures of Trina kicking and shouting and generally looking like a woman scorned. During the screening, he stood at the side of the stage while Miami producer Total Freedom dropped beats and lyrical snippets from Trina songs, letting us know she was “doing this for my bitches.”"Miami NewTimes
"According to Satterwhite, “both my mother and Trina's body of work obsess so densely over objects of desire that it dissolves into abstraction”. He then takes that abstraction further by combining both of their archives and remixing Trina's body and voice, with the help of renegade DJ and producer TOTAL FREEDOM, into a platform that uses language and observation as prompt to network and unify disparate references from Google to nude male wrestlers."PAMM
