As an artist-run nonprofit unconstrained by the commercial requirements of film, Borscht centers our filmmaking process around artists.
Through our open call for submissions we receive hundreds of ideas, then select 30–40 projects a year to support. We provide commissioned filmmakers with financing and resources including in-kind gear rental, office space, insurance, production support, and post-production services as well as development workshops, consultations with Borscht Corp filmmakers, festival submission and travel assistance, marketing and distribution guidance, and the potential to screen through Borscht Film Festival outlets with an audience reach of millions.
Our approach has generated a roster of innovative moving-image projects with an unprecedented run of success including 17 films across eight consecutive years at Sundance; screenings at film festivals such as Cannes, SXSW, Rotterdam, New York, Toronto, and more; premieres on online outlets such as The Criterion Collection, New Yorker, Vice, MTV, and Vimeo Staff Picks; and exhibitions in dozens of galleries and museums like the Guggenheim, Bronx Museum, El Museo del Barrio, and MoMA PS1.
