Last year we opened our free open call, asking for project ideas from artists from, living in, or inspired by Miami. This was our most competitive year ever, with over 300 entries that were carefully examined by a moderately-qualified panel. We were completely overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of submissions, and humbled by the growth of Miami as a place of cinematic inspiration.
For the past few months, the selected projects have been in development and production, with an eye towards premiering at the next Borscht Film Festival February 22-27.
None of the films happen without support from LaCroix (who stepped up to support our all-female #NOBROZONE initiative), 150 Time Warner (supporting the 1st Generation American Filmmakers initiative), Cinereach (supporting our new home in Hialeah), and of course, the Knight Foundation, without whom we wouldn't exist.
Beyond this support, it takes an entire community to make these films happen, from Cafeteria Films providing production assistance, to The Green Agency helping with casting, to the Miami Film Development Project graciously offering in-kind equipment rentals.
From that original embarrassment of riches to choose from, here are the 28 original projects that have been commissioned for Borscht Diez:
